1. What is D.Pharm?
Diploma in Pharmacy or D.Pharm is a two-year diploma course that will familiarize you with the basics of pharmaceutical science. As a result, you will qualify to work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist in hospitals, pharmacies, and other pharmaceutical-related fields.
The course has a strong theoretical and practical program, which entails various subjects that come under pharmacy. Here’s a list of these subjects you will study in a pharmacy college in Bangalore or any other city-
● Pharmaceutics - It is a discipline that deals with the conversion of a new or old drug into suitable medication for effective use.
● Pharmaceutical Chemistry - It is the study of drugs, which includes aspects such as development, absorption, metabolism rate, etc.
● Pharmacognosy - It is the study of medication obtained from plants and other natural resources.
● Biochemistry - It is the study of chemical processes in living organisms at a cellular and molecular level.
● Clinical Pathology - It is the study of diagnosing diseases by analyzing bodily fluids such as blood, urine, and tissue homogenates. The tools used in this analysis are of chemistry, microbiology, and molecular pathology.
● Pharmacology - It is the study of drug actions based on their types, such as human-made, natural, or an endogenous molecule which shows a biochemical or physiological effect on the cell, tissue, organ, or organism.
● Toxicology - It is a discipline that concerns the study of adverse effects toxins have on living organisms and finding a cure for the same. Toxicology overlaps other disciplines such as biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and medicine.
● Pharmaceutical Jurisprudence - It is the study of laws regulating the profession of pharmacy in India.
In addition to learning these subjects, you also have to undertake practical training of 500 hours in three months. The training should be in a Govt. Hospital/Pharmacy, recognized by the Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi.
2. What is the eligibility criteria to pursue this course?
To be eligible for this course, you must complete your PUC or 10 +2 or an equivalent exam for a recognized university, with Physics, Chemistry and Biology / Mathematics. You should also be 17 or above.
3. What are the career prospects?
After completing your D.Pharm, you can land one of the following job roles in a hospital or pharmacy -
